ARC Caribbean
Rowland & Vicki Whitehead have associated with the charismatic/house church movement in Britain for 40 years (!) and with the Caribbean, surprisingly, for over 20 years. They were invited there in 1989 by a Guyanese church leader and went out from City Life Church in Southampton to live and work in Barbados in 1995. Vivien (Rowley’s Mum), joined them later in 1996.
They began to make their distinctive contribution; building relationships, drawing leaders together and enhancing/updating the vision and practice of the church. They have spent time understanding both the secular and church cultures and building up a network of friends and opportunities for serving the region.
Vicki’s interest in dyslexia has mushroomed and she has been in great demand both as a teacher and trainer. Vivien, in her 90’s (!), has facilitated everything by running all aspects of the very busy home.
As well as encouraging new expressions of church, their work in the tertiary institutions of University, 6th Form College and Technical College has endeared them to a generation of young people. Although still relating widely, their primary focus is to ‘bring to birth’ a spiritually significant generation of young adults who will be carriers of God’s presence and purposes - agents of change - throughout the Caribbean region.
Now in 2009 they are reviewing all of the above and considering relocating from Barbados to create new strategies to accomplish the rest of their unfulfilled vision. Rowley keeps a blog which you can follow here.
